Yes, this is Midwestern inspirational pap but I like it, goddamit and it’s making me feel better today.
Over g-chat, I am pep talking Jessica on the post graduation woes that everyone goes through. Five years ago to this exact day, I didn’t have a job and I had this super loser unemployed boyfriend. All we did all day long was talked about how miserable we both were. He would whine about how he didn’t have a college degree, I would whine that I had a triple major and a college degree and no one would hire me. Then 6 pm would roll around, we would make dinner and drink 40s. I actually couldn’t afford to eat, but I could definitely afford the $1.60 budweiser 40s at the local bodega. I remember being such a mess the first 4 months out of college. I was in a new city with no friends, afraid to talk to strangers, and no job prospects. We eventually broke up because we couldn’t handle each other’s douche-y depression.
The first year out of college is rough, no matter who you are, you will make the least amount of money ever in your life. It makes minimum wage at the coffee shop senior year look like a cake walk, at least then I had grants and scholarships to pay my rent. My rent was also 325, after I moved to NYC, it was 650. My mother helped me out every month as much as she could. About a month after, eventually I got a job, started making more money, then I got a boyfriend with a job. Then I quit that job for a job that paid more money and so on and so forth.
We don’t talk about our finances in New York because frankly it’s not polite. I told her, “I am staying in tonight” is really code for “I have no money to go out and get wasted.” Everyone’s broke, some of us just know how to budget better for drinking.
